Freshman Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) had season highs for points and 3-pointers, but the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team came up just short at McHenry County in a 65-61 loss on Saturday afternoon.
Neal knocked down six 3s and scored a game-high 20 for the Chargers (4-5) in a losing cause. Sandburg also got 11 points from sophomore guard Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central). Nine of Droste’s points came in the first half, as the Chargers went into the locker room down 32-31.
The Scots (7-2) outscored Sandburg 18-13 in the third quarter to push their lead to six and held on the rest of the way. Five players scored in double figures for McHenry County, which was led by Lacey Gardner’s 14 points.
Sandburg will look to bounce back when it hosts Southeastern (Iowa) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
